Thailand’s Ayutthaya World Heritage site sustains heavy flood damage

Friday, 14 October 2011By  MCOT

Thailand’s flood has threatened the 370-year-old Chaiwatthanaram Temple, one of the country's most famous tourist attractions, across the Chao Phraya River from Ayutthaya, the former capital of Siam, as local authorities are struggling to fight severe flooding to save the historic site.
Chaiwatthanaram Temple has been transformed into an island system submerged under two metres with the central prang and outlying stupas in deep water since Tuesday morning after a 60-metre section of the dyke in the temple perimeter collapsed due to torrential waterflow from the river.
Under the plan to save the World Heritage site and its 32 acre surroundings, the authorities are trying first to block further water intrusions by reinforcing the sandbag embankments and plugging the section of breached dyke before pumping out the flood water.
However, the attempt is tedious and time-consuming, a process obstructed by the swift, strong waterflow as flat-bottomed boats are able to reach the damaged dyke and carry only one sand bag at a time.
Built in 1630 in the late Ayutthaya period during the reign of King Prasart Thong, the temple has a striking architectural design unlike other temples in Ayutthaya.
The structure of the temple’s buildings is similar to that of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, symbolising Mount Sumeru, the holy mountain of Buddhist cosmology but the distinctive architectural style demonstrates the real Thai artistic workmanship.
The main chapel outside the cloister houses the principle Buddha image in the attitude of meditation representing the Lord Buddha when he attained enlightenment under the Maha Bodhi Tree on the banks of the Niranjana (now called Lilanja) River.
Wat Chaiwatthanaram was an important temple in Ayutthaya as it was a royal temple where kings and members of the royal family performed religious ceremonies.
During the reign of King Boromakot, the temple was used for cremation ceremonies for  the royal family members and noblemen.

The Local's guide to German castles

Published: 6 Oct 11 11:59 CET
Kicking off a month focusing on Germany’s castles, palaces and crumbling ruins, The Local introduces 12 of the best – and one of the spookiest – royal locales.

From the ruins of Heidelberg, which American author Mark Twain loved to frequent, to the Disneyesque splendour of Neuschwanstein, swathed in the mystery of “Mad Ludwig’s” sudden death, castles across Germany don’t fit a particular cookie cutter shape.

The buildings’ purposes over the ages have been as diverse as their construction, and include a porcelain factory, a private office, a children’s summer camp, a hostel, government residences, Nazi headquarters and even wedding receptions.

Some rivers flowing through Germany, such as the Rhine and Mosel, feature stretches where castles pop up along every second hill. In Rhineland-Palatinate, three medieval fortresses along the Rhine’s left bank have never been destroyed. One of the three, the Castle of Eltz, has been owned by the same family for over 800 years.

Germany originated as a patchwork of states, kingdoms and territories, which periodically fought each other, teamed up against common enemies, united and then faced off against each other again.

This political and military uncertainty created perfect conditions over the centuries for the construction of a huge range of castles, palaces and in-between buildings such as fortified monasteries. Although, even after the trend towards building the elaborate structures had subsided, rulers such as Landgrave Wilhelm IX in Hesse commissioned new buildings designed to resemble ancient ruins.

Legends and myths have, of course, grown along with the battlements, and while Schwerin’s parliamentary seat may not really have a small ghost roaming its halls, the island palace may still be worth a visit.

BRICS’ shows power by vetoing UN Syria text

United Nations: The Russian and Chinese “double veto” of a UN resolution condemning Syria highlights the power of a small club of emerging-market nations – and the extent to which Libya still divides the UN Security Council.
But for a UN body that has been more often divided and incapable of acting during its six-decade history, some diplomats say the Syria vote is business as usual as Russia, China and their allies on the council try to curb US and European enthusiasm for some of the Arab Spring pro-democracy uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa.

Russia, China to co-operate on modernization

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is in Beijing to talk Russian-Chinese bilateral ties and to sign an intergovernmental memorandum on co-operation in the modernization of the two economies.
This is Putin’s first trip abroad since he announced his plan to run for the presidency in March 2012 and, considering his rather high approval rating among the population, it is likely that he will return to the Kremlin for at least six years.
In Beijing, the premier is accompanied by an army of top Russian businessmen and officials. During the two-day visit, Putin will participate in the 16th regular meeting of the heads of the two governments and meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao. The sides are expected to discuss a bunch of topics ranging from economy and science to technical and humanitarian co-operation.
"Special attention will be paid to the improvement of the mutual trade infrastructure, expansion of investment interaction and co-operation in highly technological fields, and implementation of long-term projects in the field of energy,” the Russian government’s press-service said earlier, as cited by Itar-Tass.
Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao are also expected to sign an intergovernmental memorandum of co-operation in modernization – an analog of the Russia-EU Modernization Partnership plan.
This new complex document is aimed at encouraging Russian-Chinese co-operation “on a large number of innovative projects in different areas of industry, and, also in such fields as energy efficiency, IT and space," Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Zhukov said in an interview with Kommersant daily, published on the eve of Putin’s visit.
The newspaper, citing a source at the Russian Foreign Ministry, writes that the Chinese side has long been proposing launching a program similar to that which Moscow agreed with the European Union. “We believe this idea is quite reasonable,” the source said. Russia expects the project to be “bidirectional”, which means that it may help China in developing atomic energy, space and aviation construction. The Asian republic, for its part, could help Russia to progress in the development of high-speed rail network, shipbuilding and alternative energy sources.
Up until now, Russia has mainly been mainly looking westwards when it comes to innovative technology that could help the country modernize its economy. As for Asia, the only memorandum on modernization was signed between Russia and South Korea in November last year, during President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to Seoul, reminds the paper. Only two years ago the Kremlin was skeptical about China’s technological development, explaining it mainly by the use of cheap labor force.
Last week, speaking at the VTB Capital “Russia Calling!” investment forum, Putin noted that technology is concentrated in Europe, but for investment opportunities and markets one should look to Asia – specifically China, Japan, South Korea and India.
“We share a huge border with China. We’ve lived side by side for thousands of years. Today, our interstate relations are at perhaps their highest level ever (comparable only to a brief period during the Soviet era, after WWII). We enjoy good, friendly, mature relations with China today. And China is highly interested in developing its relations with Russia further,” he said, as cited on the head of the government’s official website.
Putin observed that Russian technology “is in demand in China in sectors such as the nuclear energy industry”.
“We are building the Tianwang power plant there, employing the most advanced technology, and our Chinese partners are pleased about that, as it benefits their economy both in terms of energy production and a technological upgrade,” the PM said.
According to Deputy PM Zhukov, during the visit the sides plan to sign deals on 20 projects, worth US$7 billion, cited RIA Novosti.
The talks will not be all about economy and trade, though and regional problems as well as burning international issues are also expected to be discussed. Russia and China have recently used their veto right at the UN Security Council over a draft resolution against Syria, which shows that the two powers share now similar approaches to the situation in the Middle East.
Some experts and the media are now speculating whether Putin’s trip to Beijing – shortly after the announcement of his presidential ambitions – may be a symbolic gesture hinting at Russia’s future geopolitical strategies.
Germany's Merkel leaves crisis-hit euro area for Asia
11 October 2011 | 07:18 | FOCUS News Agency
Home / European Union
Hanoi. German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Vietnam on Tuesday, leaving behind the debt crisis raging in the euro area to push a free trade deal and press the communist nation on human rights, AFPreports.
The trip, which will also take her to Mongolia, comes shortly after Merkel vowed with French President Nicolas Sarkozy a response within weeks to the economic storm which has raised fears for Europe's banking sector.
Ahead of the four-day visit, Merkel, who is accompanied by top business leaders eyeing investment opportunities, stressed the need to boost ties between the two fast-growing Asian nations and Europe's top economy.
"Vietnam is an emerging country in Asia, has enjoyed fast-paced economic growth in recent years and is increasingly becoming a competitor for large nations like China," Merkel said in her regular weekend podcast.
A senior government source in Berlin said Merkel would push a free-trade accord between the European Union and Vietnam, adding that Germany "is a very strong supporter" of such a deal.
